Ida (Janet Mayer, right) and fellow mother duck Kaydee Heddle discuss hatching techniques during rehearsal for the Toppenish Creek Player’s upcoming production, “Honk”, The play is the Broadway musical adaptation of the children’s book, “The Ugly Duckling”, Ginny Wells is directing the local play which features 15 cast members, including four children. The local theatre troupe will present six performances – March 29, 30 and 31 and April 5, 6, and 7 at the Yakama Cultural Center’s auditorium. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors age 60 and over and students age 18 and younger. Tickets are available at Wells Accounting or from cast members.

The Granger High School boys’ basketball team celebrates after receiving the SCAC West league championship trophy on Friday, Feb. 6 after beating Naches Valley, 69-60. Granger, ranked number two in the State Class A prep polls, will face Mabton this week for the District title. For more sports action, please see Sports on Page 10.

Sukiyaki Dinner diners crowd the Wapato Buddhist community gym for the annual fundraising event Sunday, March 7. This year’s dinner honored the first generation of Japanese that settled in the area, and featured a display of artifacts from that era. The items on display will become part of an exhibit at the Yakima Museum. Attendees enjoyed dine-in or take-out dinners.

The Toppenish Middle School hosted the Lower Yakima Valley Math Competition this year for 6th, 7th and 8th graders from eight area schools. Students competed in six math categories.
