Toppenish: Murals Draw Visitors World-Wide

With 69 large historical murals painted on the outside walls of buildings as of spring, 2006, Toppenish has become an attraction that draws visitors from around the world.

Just check the world map on the wall of the Visitors Center at 5-A South Toppenish Ave. and you’ll see it covered with pins stuck all over the globe.

The office serves as headquarters for the Toppenish Mural Society and the Toppenish Chamber of Commerce.

Mural painting season is from April through about the end of October. If you’re in town during that time, not only can you enjoy a
tour of the murals, but you may have an opportunity to see one of the artists at work on a mural.

The Toppenish Mural Society was formed in 1989. Members annually elect directors to the board, which conducts the business and formulates the policy for the organization.

A big reason for the success of the program is the quality of the murals. Before an artist’s idea can find its way to a Toppenish wall as a mural, it must go through a rigorous process in which its merits are judged. A proposed mural must be historically accurate, meet high artistic standards, and fit in the time frame of 1850 to 1950.

Meanwhile, a site committee selects a wall for the project and secures the necessary wall lease agreement. Finally, a negotiating committee discusses fees with the artist, with the board of directors having final approval.
